Green-lipped mussels as premium food

A Christchurch mussel company has set its sights on international horizons in the fight against inflammatory diseases. Aroma NZ specialises in green-lipped mussel oil and powder and is expanding their oil extraction plant to cater for the demand, particularly in South East Asia.

"Inflammation is one of the most widespread diseases in the world and as people age, joints and tendons start to wear and large numbers of people experience osteo and rheumatoid arthritis," Aroma director Ben Winters says.

"Green-lipped mussels are a potent source of Omega-3 and have a powerful anti-inflammatory action. We have scientific evidence supporting the use of green-lipped mussels for joint pain relief.

"Our world famous green-lipped mussels have been hailed as a new super food because they can be used to ease arthritis pain and provide other health benefits."

Their mussel oil is currently featured on five home shopping channels in the Korean market and is being registered in China, where it could really take off, Mr Winters says.

After exhibiting at trade shows in Hong Kong and Bangkok, Mr Winters has made a large number of contacts who have showed interest. Product samples are currently being analysed and registered across South East Asia, he says.

The company has also spied potential in the region's pet food industry and is looking to exhibit at the top pet food shows in China next year.

"China had a one child policy so there are a large number of pet owners who treat their pets as part of the family. Purchasing premium pet food and supplements to keep their pets healthy is a top priority," Mr Winters says.

Despite the earthquakes, the business has boomed for Aroma, after opening a bigger factory east of Christchurch. This allows for extraction of Omega-3 fatty acids and high quality lipids from marine and botanical ingredients without using toxic chemicals or solvents.

In 2011, the New Zealand aquaculture industry generated $400 million in revenue and has a target of $1 billion by 2025.

Aroma NZ will exhibit at Pet Fair Asia on August 18-21, 2016. Hall 3, Stand J1081.
