The number of pet owners in China increased by more than 8%

According to the data of “2019 China Pet Industry White Paper” released by Dogmin.com, the number of pet owners (dogs and cats) in cities and towns nationwide in 2019 reached 61.2 million, an increase of 4.72 million over the previous year; the number of cats in cities and towns nationwide in 2019 was 24.51 million people, the number of dog owners is 36.69 million, cat owners increased more than dog owners. Of the total number of pet owners in cities and towns in the country in 2019, 17% have pet dogs and cats. In 2019, the national penetration rate of pet breeds for dogs and cats in cities and towns was 23%, an increase of 4% over 2018.

According to the white paper on China’s pet industry in 2019, China’s pet market has reached 202.4 billion yuan in 2019, up 18.50% year-on-year. The industry’s market size more than doubled in the five years from 2015 to 2019, with a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20%.

Compared with foreign countries where the pet market is basically mature, China’s pet industry is still in the stage of rapid development. In the United States, the total number of pets is about 1.3 times the national population, and more than 43% of households have a dog license. In France, the number of registered pet dogs is also more than one-sixth of the country’s population. In contrast, China has a small number of pets, and the domestic pet market still has a lot of room for growth.

In terms of pet categories, the pet dog consumption market size was 124.4 billion yuan, an increase of 17.8% over the previous year; the pet cat consumption market size was 78 billion yuan, an increase of 19.6% over the previous year. In terms of scale, the size of the pet dog market is still much higher than the size of the pet cat market, but in terms of growth rate, the growth rate of pet cat consumption exceeds that of dogs.

From the perspective of the pet consumption structure, the consumption of pet food is the largest pet keeping expenditure. Consumption of pet snacks and pet medicines grew fastest. The consumption of pet food accounted for the highest proportion of the overall consumption structure of pet keeping, reaching 61.4%, an increase of 9.2% over the previous year. In each subcategory, the spending on pet snacks increased by 8% and that on pet medicine by 4%, which were the two categories with the fastest consumption growth.
