Show Review (2016)
Shanghai, 28th October 2016
Full speed maturity for the 19th edition of Pet Fair Asia
The 19th edition of Pet Fair Asia took place in Shanghai at the World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, on August 18-21, 2016.
Year after year, the growth forecasts for Pet Fair Asia are repeatedly getting blown away by measured attendance. As visitors, it feels like discovering a whole new continent each time one come back to Shanghai during that hot month of August. The show's surface area has grown 6 times in 6 years, with 800 exhibitors occupying in 2016 a total of 71,000sqm*. For those of you who visited the event few years back, the difference is jaw dropping. After opening an extra hall in 2015 and another one in 2016 – immediately used at 100%, the organizer will increase the total space to 100,000sqm in 2017 to accommodate the growth of the show.
Multinationals and leading brands from all over the world were all present again at Pet Fair Asia: Mars, Royal Canin, Nestle Purina, Eukanuba, Flexi, Pet Safe, Fish 4 Dogs, Petio, Doggyman, United Pets, The Company of Animals, Touchdog, Natural Balance Pet Foods, etc. Numerous companies from Europe and USA were present for the first time in an exhibition for Asia markets, like Martin Sellier (France), Terra Canis (Germany), FoodScience Corp. (USA) and many more. Country pavilions are also developing at a fast rate, with 2 new comers in 2016: Taiwan, South-Korea, Japan, Brazil, etc.
In terms of visitors, the show was busier than ever and the exhibition center started to show some limits in terms of capacity : with 26,824* professionals visiting the event during the first 2 days, the 6m wide alleys sometime felt like narrow corridors at pick hours. The show nonetheless brought to exhibitors not only more visitors (which is not always a good thing), but better quality buyers. Sophia Chui, purchasing manager from Fressnapf (Germany), commented: “The overall show is great; we met existing and new suppliers, found good and surprising items. I am truly impressed by the level of service. The conference before the show is a time-effective event to gather valuable information about market trends and meet decision makers in a very exclusive environment.”
Overseas visitors are definitely on the rise and now represent 16% of professionals attending the show, with a fast growing number of visitors coming from other Asian countries – South Korea is now the number 1 foreign country to visit Pet Fair Asia, followed by Taiwan, Hong-Kong, Japan and Thailand. The new Aquarium section introduced this year came with a rapid progress of visitors from Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Middle-East. Purchasing power from European and American buyers is also getting strong, with handpicked visitors from large specialized retails chains (PetSmart, Fressnapf, Petland, Kiwoko…), hypermarkets (Carrefour, Walmart…)
On the other hand, the public days attracted more than 80,000 visitors, a figure that was also above the organizer expectations.
As every year, three high level conferences were co-located with the show. The International Pet Industry Summit took place the day before Pet Fair Asia and focused on business trends in Asia, in a privileged environment to meet decision makers – CEO, Business development directors, Category Managers and Purchase Department directors. The 5th Petfood Forum China gathered upstream suppliers, pet food manufacturers and private label companies around the theme of brand development for new pet food products. Last but not least, the 3rd Annual meeting for Pet Hospital Management covered two subjects of major importance in Asia: Hospital Design & Floor Plan, and Staff Motivation & Empowerment.
Pet Fair Asia will come back on 24-27 August 2017, moving to Shanghai New International Expo Center to support the growth of the show and improve visitor flow. Pet Fair Asia 2017 will be preceded by the International Pet Industry Summit on August 23rd.
"The exhibition attendance obviously increased again in this year, with improved overall quality: better local professionals, more international buyers, excellent brand awareness from consumers. Definitely a great year for our company at Pet Fair Asia." (Wang Yang, Shanghai Saloge Import & Export Ltd)
“Fish4Dogs has exhibited at the Pet Fair Asia for several years. For our business, the event is an excellent shop window for both China and the wider Asia-Pacific markets because we have good products and great distributors. Asia Pet Fair is an interesting mix of both professional and general public customers. This means that we can showcase, and sell, all that we produce whilst supporting our Chinese colleagues. Fish4dogs will be there again in 2016!” (Toby Hart, Fish4Dogs)
"Pet Fair Asia is a great networking event for the pet industry in Asia. It gives us the chance to interact with the key contributors to China and overseas pet markets. I can’t say enough of the wealth of knowledge that I have gained through the show and co-located conferences like the International Pet Industry Summit. In my opinion, Pet Fair Asia was much bigger than last year, and it seems the distributors/brands are spending increasing amounts on booth design and promotion, etc. Last but not least, I was pleased to see the development of Korean brands at the show and I believe 2016 will see an even stronger participation from Korean companies." (James Kim, PetCome Korea)
“The overall show is great; we met existing and new suppliers, found good and surprising items. I am truly impressed by the level of service. The conference before the show is a time effective event to gather valuable information about market trends and meet decision makers in a very exclusive environment. We’ll be back next year and hope to find an even larger selection of exporters and private label manufacturers.” (Sophia Chui, Fressnapf)
